Doha has been named the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026, with Qatar's capital set to host a year-long programme of events to celebrate the prestigious designation.
The annual regional title is bestowed by the Gulf Cooperation Council on a city for its cultural authenticity, sustainability efforts, innovation, or growth. Taking over from the garden city of Al Ain in the UAE, Doha was chosen thanks to its 'varied tourism experience.'
Qatar Tourism submitted a bid highlighting the city's strengths as a tourism destination, drawing particular focus to its transport infrastructure, including the award-winning Hamad International Airport and the Doha Metro & Tram.
H.E. Mr. Saad bin Ali Al-Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism, said: "This recognition reflects the qualitative progress achieved in building an integrated and sustainable tourism ecosystem that is competitive at both regional and global levels."
Doha offers diverse attractions for tourists, from the traditional Souq Waqif marketplace to the I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar. Having hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022, the city is well-equipped for sports tourism.
Key events in 2026 include Art Basel Qatar's debut at M7 (February 5-7), the Finalissima at Lusail Stadium featuring Argentina vs Spain, and the annual Doha Film Festival and Qatar International Art Festival.
The designation highlights the growing competitiveness of GCC destinations and the region's collective investment in tourism infrastructure and experiences.
